What is Carbon Removal?

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

Carbon credits are verified emission reductions which allow owners to emit the equivalent amount of credited emissions. Unfortunately, the emissions produced by individuals and businesses who offset with carbon credits are still emitted. These emissions are not removed. Carbon credits prevent potential future emissions from happening but do not remove historic emissions.

CO2 removal is the act of taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and removing it from the carbon cycle by storing it long term. It is the actual reduction of atmospheric CO2, not the avoidance of future emissions. Work is ongoing to develop methodologies for carbon removal, but here are some recognized methods:

  • Planting trees

  • Direct air capture and storage

  • Enhanced weathering

  • Ocean fertilization

  • Biochar based carbon sequestration
